Woodenbridge G.C.
18th/19 of August
Congratulations to Stephen Doyle For winning The
H.E. Martineau Trophy
and to the Wrinklies for winning the inaugural
Red Baron Cup

The Capt. H.E. Martineau Trophy took place at Woodenbridge Golf Club on the 18th & 19th August. Woodenbridge proved a fantastic venue, the golf course nestled in a natural valley, where the Avoca and Aughrim rivers meet surrounded by dense mature forests. Joe Carr wasn’t wrong when he dubbed it the ‘Augusta of Ireland’!
This year’s Overnight outing took on a slightly different format, as well as competing for the Capt. H.E. Martineau Trophy, a Ryder Cup style team event was introduced with the inaugural Red Baron Cup being contested between the retirees (aka the Wrinklies) and the active pilots (aka the Twinklies).

Day 1 was Fourball better ball (pairings were randomly selected) with normal Matchplay rules applying, each player playing their own ball, the player with the highest stableford score on the hole winning the hole for their team.
At the conclusion of day 1 it was a tight affair with the younger Twinklies edging it 4:3 (Would Captains Eoin McCarthy and Fran McDonald rue throwing away a commanding 4 up with 5 to play lead in their match against Dennis Coughlan and Darren Bolton)

After Dinner the activities moved to bar where a most enjoyable night was had by all. Tactics for day 2 were discussed with the general consensus being that the ‘Twinklies’ wouldn’t be able to match their day one heroics after a late night in the bar, the ‘Wrinklies’ being much more match fit in this regard! Capt. Stephen Cashen did however give a remarkable demonstration of controlled rest on a high stool.
Day 2 was Singles, Single Stableford Matchplay, with the winner of each match winning a point for their team..
With a total of 21 Points up for grabs a score of 11 was needed to win the inaugural Red Baron Trophy. The Twinklies looked good early on taking a lead in their first 3 matches but the retirees match fitness started to show on the back nine and they stormed into the lead however a late surge from the Twinklies kept it close, the Wrinklies finally prevailing 11:10 to win the inaugural Red Baron Trophy. One of the highlights included retired Capt. Robbie Conroy’s most impressive 7 and 5 win over Capt. Dave Morgan.
In the Individual stableford competition for the Capt. H.E. Martineau Trophy congratulations to F/O Stephen Doyle, who with two spectacular consecutive rounds of 39 points is this years winner. Overnight leaders John Haugh and Will Doyle suffered the ‘Wilson Greenlee’ curse and were unfortunately unable to replicate their day one heroics.
