Headfort G.C.
Congratulations to
Dean Rogers winning
The Eric Martineau trophy

Our 3rd outing of the year was our overnight outing competing for the Capt. H.E. Martineau Trophy. The overnight outing was reintroduced to the Red Barons calendar in 2022 after a long absence and has gone from strength to strength. This year it was held at Headfort Golf Club, Kells, September 2nd & 3rd, playing the New Course day one and the Old Course day two. We had a total of 16 golfers participate over both days. The weather again played a factor, with glorious sunny conditions day one. Day two was however a different story with thunderous downpours throughout the day!
Day one produced some fine scores with Wilson Greenlee repeating his Sleeve Russell day one heroics of 2022 firing himself into a commanding lead, shooting a superb 39pts. At the end of round one, the leaderboard was a tight affair with 5 points separating the top 6 players.
Day one Leaderboard,
1st. F/O Wilson Greenlee 39pts.
2nd. F/O John French 37pts.
3rd. Capts. Donal O’Shea & Eoin McCarthy 36pts.
5th. Capts. Tom O’Flynn & Keith Monaghan 34Pts.
7th. F/O Dean Rogers 33pts.
8th. Capt. Fran McDonald 32pts.
After the day’s golf, everyone enjoyed a fine meal at the Headfort Arms Hotel before finding a suitable watering hole nearby. Wilson, conscious of his ill-fated decision to stay out drinking in 2022 made the mature decision to drink Guinness Zero this time round, hoping to give himself the best opportunity to continue his fine from from day one into day two.
Conditions day two were atrocious, the weather finally catching up with the Red Barons, torrential rain being the order of the day. F/O Dean Rogers playing in the final group didn’t let the weather, or the copious pints the night before, upset him and played flawless golf shooting a fantastic 1 under par round.
Day one contenders F/O John French and Capt. Eoin McCarthy played some fine golf but were just unable to match F/O Dean Rogers’ majestic display and despite a heroic effort by Capt. Darren Bolton also shooting 39 points day two, he ultimately left himself with to much to do after a day one score of only 30 points. As for overnight leader F/O Wilson Greenlee, he fell off the pace considerably and once again must be questioning his overnight tactics.
Day two without a doubt belonged to F/O Dean Rogers as he romped home to win the Capt. Eric Martineau Trophy.

1st. F/O Dean Rogers, 72 points.
